Both SUVs have plenty of horsepower and space for seven or eight passengers and cargo, but here are a few reasons that Ford Explorer has been America’s best-selling SUV over the last 30 years:
The 2020 Explorer has four engine choices, including a powerful turbocharged V6 and a fuel-efficient hybrid, with 27 mph city, 29 mph highway and a 500 mile range, while the 2020 Traverse has one engine choice.
Rear-wheel drive is standard on the 2020 Explorer while front-wheel drive is standard on the Traverse. Rear-wheel drive vehicles handle better in curves, turns and navigating through traffic, and rear-wheel drive is better for towing because the front wheels have better steering with less weight on them.
The Explorer can tow from 5,000 to 5,600 pounds as opposed to 1,500 to 5,000 on the Traverse. Explorer also wins on torque with 310 lb.-ft. as opposed to 266 on the Traverse. The Explorer is favored by families looking for safety features. Safety features that are standard on the Explorer but unavailable on the Traverse are brake assist, blind spot monitor, lane departure warning, knee air bag, cross-traffic alert and lane keeping assist.
Only available on the Explorer is the intelligent 4WD, which includes the Terrain Management System with seven selectable drive modes: Normal, Sport, Tow/Haul, Eco, Gravel/Grass/Snow, Sand and Mud/Ruts. Switching between modes is easy with a single dial in the center console.
